Adobe Debuts New Flash Products

Adobe Systems is rolling out the Adobe Flash Media Server 3 family of products, which offers streaming media and real-time communication capabilities.

The new products, announced Dec. 4, offer industry standard H.264 video capabilities and High Efficiency AAC (HE-AAC) audio support. They also feature increased protection for streaming high-quality video and for the delivery of interactive media applications that work consistently across multiple browsers and operating systems.

In addition, the Adobe Flash Media Server 3 provides a more efficient instant-on video experience to the Web, the desktop with Adobe Media Player and to mobile devices with Adobe Flash Lite 3.

The new product line includes two offerings: Adobe Flash Media Streaming Server 3 for live and on-demand video streaming and Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3 for customized scalable video streaming services, plus multi-way social media applications.

"By offering the Flash Media Server 3 product line coupled with new pricing options, Adobe is reducing the barrier to entry for content owners who want to deliver streaming video or real-time communications online," said John Loiacono, senior vice president of creative solutions at Adobe. "Whether they opt for interactive social media services or linear streaming, our customers can feel confident that their media is more secure and that the end-user experience is the highest quality."

Adobe Flash Media Server 3 is expected to be available in January 2008 and will ship with special pre-built services, making it easier to stream Flash Player-compatible video. Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3 will be offered at $4,500. For single-server deployments, Adobe Flash Media Streaming Server 3 will be available at $995.

Meanwhile, Adobe also announced the availability of Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3 software, previously code-named "Moviestar." Adobe Flash Player 9 now includes H.264 standard video support, the same standard deployed in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD high definition video players, and HE-AAC audio capabilities. The latest update also features hardware accelerated, multi-core enhanced, full-screen video playback for high-resolution viewing across major operating systems and browsers. The combination of Adobe Flash Player 9 and Adobe Flash Media Server 3—also announced Dec. 4—enables the delivery of HD-quality video to the broadest online audience. Adobe Flash Player 9 Update 3 is available immediately here.

Adobe Flash Player 9 is immediately available as a free download for Windows, Macintosh and Linux platforms.

Yahoo to put adverts in PDF files

Yahoo has reached a deal to start running advertisements in Adobe's popular PDF document-reading format.

The service will allow publishers to make money by including adverts linked to the content of a PDF document in a panel at the side of the page.

It is Yahoo's latest way of expanding the places it can advertise online following deals with the auction site Ebay and the cable TV group Comcast.

The advertisements will not appear if the PDF document is printed.

It is the first time that Adobe has allowed dynamic adverts into its PDF (Portable Document Format) files.

Dynamic adverts can be changed for particular audiences or rotated to make sure that a particular user never sees the same advertisement twice.

PDF files can be created by a range of software and can then be read by people who have a PDF reader, such as Adobes Reader.

The PDF format has proved popular with both companies and home users, and has been used to produce large reports and shorter newsletters, as well as preparing documents for printers.

Buzzword

Now, over the past year or so there has been a real move to push applications that live on the desktop into the online world.

Adobe made news a few months back by announcing that a basic version of Photoshop is to exist as an online application.

And now they have bought a company which has developed a sophisticated online word processor.

And it is creating quite a buzz as its name would suggest.

Buzzword is a flash-based application which - as it lives on the web - does not require any download onto your PC, apart from the basic Flash player that is.

In its look and feel it is definitely way ahead of Google docs. The menu system is in the form of toolbars which whizz across the screen once you have selected one.

It looks great and while it does not have the functionality of, say, Microsoft Word, you can do things like automatic spell checking as you type as well as insert tables, images, and lists.

And while a few basic features are notable by their absence, like word count and copying and pasting to and from the desktop applications, support for new features are being added all the time.

Once you have finished your document, you can save it in a regular .doc or .rtf format and import it into your desktop word processor.

Features Include:

* Flexible, low-latency mixing engine—Work with high-performance audio devices that use the ASIO driver model. Mix your tracks on the fly, hearing changes as you make them. The mixing engine offers tremendous routing flexibility with support for all the effects you want, and VSTi virtual instrument support means even greater sonic variety, flexibility, and precision.

* Integrated wave-editing view with Mastering Rack—Record and edit individual audio files with fast, accurate tools that are also tightly integrated with the Multitrack View for an improved workflow. Use the Mastering Rack to apply and preview multiple effects simultaneously when working with files in Edit View. Quickly edit how your file starts and ends by zooming in with the Top and Tail View, and then adjust with on-clip controls for volume and fades.

* Unmatched audio restoration tools including frequency space editing—Restore recordings from old vinyl, remove hisses and hums, fix clipped audio and phase problems, and recover previously unusable recordings. Editing in frequency space has become more flexible with the new Effects Paintbrush tool and Spot Healing Brush.

Loops automatically match global session tempo and key to produce dynamic compositions. Thousands of uncompressed, 32-bit, royalty-free loops are included.

* Audio editing for video, including unmatched integration with Adobe video software— Edit video soundtracks easily with the ability to view video frames in the timeline and import and export video files, including AVI, native DV, and WMV. * Recordable parameter automation, including external hardware support—Move volume, pan, and effects controls as you listen, and record those changes to your mix in real time. Your changes appear as envelopes that can be edited in the timeline. Real-time parameter changes can also be made using an external hardware controller.

* Surround Encoder—Use the Surround Encoder to view a video while keyframing or editing any multitrack mix into a 5.1 surround-sound experience, and then export the results as an interleaved file for use in Adobe Premiere Pro.
